New Laptops for Learning & Old Laptops for Check Out @ the Keokuk Public Library
The Keokuk Public Library recently purchased 6 new laptop computers for free basic computer classes. Patrons of any age can contact the library at 524-1483 and add their name to a waiting list for one or more classes, including Computer Basics (for those with little to no experience), Internet, Advanced Internet, Email, Advanced Email, Word, Excel, Flash Drives, and Facebook. Staff members will contact you when a class is scheduled.
The laptops were purchased by the Keokuk Public Library Foundation with grants from the Keokuk Area Community Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, and the Grace Bott Millar Foundation.
The older laptops are now available for check-out to use inside the library. Laptops follow the same rules of checkout as books, but users must be at least 18, sign an agreement form, and those without a library card must leave a photo ID. If a laptop is damaged or removed from the building the user will be billed for the damages or replacement costs. Laptops check out for 2 hours, or longer if there is no one else is waiting.
The library hopes this will cut down on waiting lists for public computers, and allow adults to browse the Internet in any corner of the library. Patrons can also borrow a laptop to use in a meeting. And with the built-in microphone they can practice their foreign language skills with the library’s subscription to Tell Me More language-learning database in a meeting room or lobby.
If you have questions about checking out a laptop, or would like to take a free computer class, please call the Keokuk Public Library at (319) 524-1483 or email the director.
